FAQ

The questions we hear most.

If your question is not here, call or email. Every question is a good question when the return has your name on it.

The practice

Are you taking new clients?
Yes, year-round. New client onboarding is easiest before mid-March. After that it is still possible; it just moves faster.
Do I have to come to the office?
No. Most of the work can be done through the portal. If you prefer to come in, that is welcome. If you moved out of state, we handle it remotely.
Do you work with people outside New York?
Yes, for the states we are set up to prepare in. Send us the state on your return and we will confirm.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is set on the call after we see what your return actually needs. There is no fee to talk. The checklist gives you a rough sense of complexity, not a price.

The portal

Do I have to use the portal?
No. You can drop things off, mail them, or bring them in. The portal is faster and easier to keep organized, but it is a preference, not a requirement.
Can I access last year's return in the portal?
Once the portal opens to clients, prior-year returns we prepared will be available there. Older records that live on paper stay in the office for now.
What if I lose access to my account?
You call the office and we verify who you are. Recovery is not a self-service form; it goes through a person.

Taxes

When is the return actually due?
The federal individual return is due in mid-April. Extensions are available and are not a bad thing; they extend the filing date, not the payment date.
I got a notice from the IRS. Should I panic?
No. Most notices are routine. Send it to us before doing anything else and we will read it, explain it, and draft a response if one is needed.
I have a side business. Do I need a separate return?
It depends on the entity. Sole proprietors report on Schedule C inside the personal return. LLCs and corporations file separately. We will look at what you have and tell you which applies.
Can you help with quarterly estimated payments?
Yes. We set up a schedule based on your prior return and adjust it during the year if your income changes.
